We will be reading The Ugly Vegetables by Grace Lin, a heartwarming story about a young girl who compares her family’s vegetable garden to the beautiful flower gardens of their neighbors. At first, she feels disappointed that their garden isn’t as colorful or "pretty," but as the vegetables grow and her mother makes a delicious soup from their harvest, she comes to appreciate the beauty and significance of their family's traditions. The story highlights themes of cultural appreciation, patience, and the joy of growing your own food.

We’ll be planting radishes, which are a fantastic choice for young gardeners! In The Ugly Vegetables, the story highlights the beauty of growing your own food, and radishes align perfectly with this theme.
Why Radishes?
Radishes are a great first crop for kids because:
✅ Fast-growing – They sprout in just a few days and are ready to harvest in about 3-4 weeks, making them an exciting and rewarding plant for young gardeners.
✅ Easy to grow – Radishes thrive in small spaces, making them perfect for container gardens or backyard plots.
✅ Resilient – They grow in various conditions and don’t require much maintenance, making them ideal for beginners.
✅ Fun to Harvest – Pulling radishes out of the soil feels like a treasure hunt, adding an element of surprise and excitement!Bringing the Story to Life
After reading The Ugly Vegetables, children will plant their own radish seeds, mirroring the gardening experience in the book. They’ll learn about patience, growth, and the importance of fresh, homegrown food. Plus, they’ll get to take home their planted seeds and watch them grow—just like in the story!
This hands-on activity connects literacy with nature and encourages curiosity about where food comes from. We can’t wait to plant, paint, and explore together!

We will get creative by painting with watercolors! This is a perfect way to express the colors and themes from the book while giving children an open-ended, sensory art experience.
Why Watercolors?
✅ Soft and Blended Colors – Just like the beautifully illustrated pages of The Ugly Vegetables, watercolors create soft, fluid blends that mimic the natural beauty of plants and flowers.
✅ Easy to Use & Mess-Friendly – Compared to other paints, watercolors are washable and low-mess, making them ideal for kids to explore without worry.
✅ Encourages Creativity & Expression – Watercolors allow for free-flowing creativity, whether children want to paint their favorite vegetables, flowers, or abstract garden scenes.
✅ Connects to Nature – Watercolors are made to flow and blend, just like the way water nourishes plants—a perfect tie-in to our gardening theme!Bringing the Story to Life Through Art
Children can use greens, purples, reds, and yellows to paint their own imaginary gardens or recreate scenes from The Ugly Vegetables. They’ll have the freedom to mix colors, experiment with different brush strokes, and see how water transforms their artwork—just like how time and care transform seeds into plants!
This watercolor activity provides a gentle, nature-inspired way to reflect on the story while encouraging children to observe and appreciate the colors and shapes found in gardens. Plus, it’s a calming, mindful way to end our event—nurturing creativity just like we nurture plants.
